[14/05/2010] What is lawn mower
A lawn mower is any form of machine, which uses rotating blades to cut grass on a lawn at an even length.
The first mechanic mower, which was a reel-type, was developed by an English engineer in the beginning of the 19th century. The mower had number of blades, placed around a cylinder and was human powered. The first lawn mower, suitable for mass-production was designed in 1870 by the American Elwood McGuire and the success of his invention was due to the simplicity of his machine – it had less movable parts, it was lighter and easier to operate.
Today, the lawn mowers come in many different designs and sizes; the smallest are human powered and meant for small residential lawns, while the biggest ride-on lawn mower are the size of an agricultural tractor and ideal for parks, golf courses, and other large areas.
All lawn mowers use rotating blades: the reel (cylinder) mowers have blades that rotate about a horizontal axis, while the rotary ones have blades that rotate about a vertical axis. According to the way they are powered, the lawn mowers are further divided into gasoline and electric.
