[14/05/2010] Types of lawn mowers by rotation

According to the rotation of their blades the lawn mowers are reel (cylinder) mowers and rotary mowers.

Reel (cylinder) mowers

The reel lawn mowers use reel of blades that rotate about a horizontal axis; there are number of advantages that the reel lawn mowers have: properly adjusted and sharpened blades give cleaner cut, which doesn’t cause browning and allows the grass to heal faster. The human-powered reel lawn mowers are also environmentally friendly and ideal for working on smaller lawns.

The reel lawn mowers themselves also come in different types and models; the manual push lawn mowers are easy to operate and maintain, inexpensive, quiet, and do not emit pollutants. However, they are usually between 12 and 20 inches wide, which is why they are commonly used only on smaller lawns. Most push lawn mowers require sharpening of the blades after certain period of time, but there are self-sharpening blade modes available as well. The no-contact push lawn mowers have a small gap between the blades and the cutting bar, which makes them easier to push, quieter and the blades don’t have to be sharpened that often.

The engine powered reel lawn mowers are either electrical or gasoline powered and the engine powers either the wheels and the reel or only the reel. The most commonly found, residential engine powered lawn mowers still require human power to be pushed. The electric models come in two variations: corded and cordless and the latter are powered by batteries.

Ride-on cylinder lawn mowers, meant for larger lawns, are also available and they are designed in such a way that the cutting reels are placed in front of the mower. Most reel lawn mowers can get their height adjusted to 1/2" - 2-1/2" and aren’t suitable for longer grass; twigs, branches and pine cones need to be raked before mowing the lawn or the reel mower might get jammed.

Rotary mowers

The rotary mowers have blades that rotate about a vertical axis; they are ideal for larger lawns, taller grass, and can easily chop twigs, without getting jammed. They are powered either by an electric or gasoline motor; the electric rotary mowers can also be cordless and corded.
