News about Lawn Mowers
[14/05/2010] Safety issues
Lawn mowers cause thousands of accidents each year; regardless of their type or power source, all models have rotating blades and some models throw debris with immense force. Most accidents caused by lawn mowers are of the following four types:
- accidents caused by getting in contact with the blades, which unusually happens when the operator tries to clean the mower, while the engine is running
- accidents caused by propelled objects
- accidents caused by ride-on mowers overturning
- ride-on mowers riding over people
In order to operate a lawn mower safely, you should:
- read the lawn mower manual carefully
- not remove or otherwise tamper with safety device on the mower
- not allow children anywhere near the mower, especially when in use
- inspect and clean the lawn before mowing
- always wear sturdy footwear
- not reverse ride-on mowers unless totally necessary
- not take passengers while riding a ride-on mower
- not clean or try to unclog the mower until the blades have completely stopped rotating
- refuel gasoline mowers only outside and when the engine is cool
- keep your pets inside the house while mowing
As with any other machinery, extreme caution should be exercised when you are operating a lawn mower in order to protect yourself, bystanders, and pets from possible injuries.
